Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Narnia are some of the best fantasy series to ever come to life. Sadly, the veteran actor, Sir Ian Holm, who played Bilbo Baggins in the hit fantasy series, The Lord of the Rings; has died today at the age of 88.
The versatile actor played everything from hobbits to androids, and successfully personified one of the fictional characters from the book.
Sir Ian Holm’s Agent and Family Confirmed the News
Just hours ago, on June 19, his agent confirmed the heartbreaking news.
“It is with great sadness we can confirm that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88. He died peacefully in hospital with his family and carer.”
To this, Holm’s agent confirmed that the actor’s illness was Parkinson’s related.
“Charming, kind, and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely.”
The news came as heartbreaking right after the virtual reunion which he was unable to attend. Earlier this month, he expressed sadness and stated how he misses them all.

“I am sorry to not see you in person, I miss you all and hope your adventures have taken you to many places, I am in lockdown in my hobbit home or holm.”
Sir Ian Holms Played Bilbo Baggins in ‘The Lord of the Rings’
Sir Ian Holms will be thoroughly missed by his fans as well as colleagues in the industry . They not only loved him but respected him as well. The National Theatre even remembers him as an “extraordinary actor” who left a lasting impression as King Lear in the 1997’s Wonderful Memories.
Apart from that, The Fifth Element and the Lord of the Rings are some of his widely known works in the movie industry.
Likewise, for his role in the 1981’s Chariots of Fire, another high-profile work, Holm’s won an Oscar nomination in best-supporting actor category. Though he failed to win the Oscar, he grabbed Bafta award for the role.
Not to mention, this phenomenal actor managed to win Bafta for the second time for his performance in the 1968’s The Bofors Gun.
During an interview with the Los Angeles Times in 2000, he said, “I’m never the same twice, and I’m not a movie star-type, so people don’t demand that I’m always the same.”Â
Similarly, in 1998, Sir Ian Holms received a knighthood for his contribution to drama right after the CBE in 1989.

As of now, he is survived by his fourth wife, de Stempel, and third wife, actress Penelope Wilton; as well as his five children. Moreover, his current wife, Sophie De Stempel, documented his final days in pastel portraits.
