Early Life of Alberto Del Rio

Jose Alberto Rodriguez was born on May 25, 1977, in San Luis Potosi City, San Luis Potosi, Mexico. He grew up around the professional wrestlers where his father is noted Luchador Dos Caras, his uncles Mil Mascaras and Sicodelico.

Also, his younger brother and cousins are professional wrestlers. His brother, Guillermo, signed a WWE contract under the ring name Memo Montenegro.

Alberto completed his study and got graduated from Universidad Autonoma de San Luis Potosi and earned a degree in architecture.

Amateur Wrestling

Del Rio started his training under Leonel Kolesni and Juan Fernandez and began to wrestle on Greco-Roman wrestling. He got a chance to play on the Mexico national team and won several competitions.

Alberto got third place at the World Junior Championship in the Czech Republic in 1997, won Central American and Caribbean Games three times, and a medal at Pan American Games.

He was sadly unable to take part in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, but couldn’t join the game due to the lack of funding and support.

Professional Wrestling Career

AAA (2000 – 2002)

With the disappointment of not being the part in Olympics games, Alberto joined his family business as a professional wrestler with his father. Alberto made his very first debut on May 9, 2000, to save his father from a beat down from El Texano and Pirata Morgan.

He then teamed up with El Gronda and El Hijo Del Solitario to defeat and revenge against Priata Morgan, Sangre Chicana, and El Brazo.

Japanese Promotions (2001 – 2004)

Alberto has his first singles match in 2001 on Battlarts promotions defeating Kazunari Murakami at the YUKI-BOM-BA-YE event. He then returned Japan on the promotion “Pro Wrestling Zero1” and “All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW).”

After these wrestling promotions, he then joined Hustle and continued till October 2004 under the ring name “Dos Caras Jr.”

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE)

Alberto Del Rio signed a three-year contract with World Wrestling Entertainment on June 17, 2009, where he was assigned to Florida Championship Wrestling. During his FCW reign, he used a face mask and hide his identity.

During the segment on Abraham Washington, Del Rio revealed his face, which was criticized by some Mexicans to remove the mask. He also appeared on several matches for Raw Brand with a ring name Dos Caras revealing his mask.

Caras puts his mask back while returning Mexican as a hometown hero but removes it during the match on Raw and SmackDown shows.

WWE Championship

Alberto Del Rio on July 17, 2011, defeated Alex Riley, Evan Bourne, Jack Swagger, Kofi Kingston, The Miz, R-Truth, and Rey Mysterio to win Money in the Bank ladder match. With the win of Money in the Bank, he got a chance for the WWE Championship title for over the next year.

Del Rio tried to cash in his Money in the Bank on the same night, where CM Punk just defeated John Cena for the WWE Championship but could not cash in as Punk attacked him.

He then successfully cashes in the Money in the Bank suitcase on August 14 at SummerSlam again, where CM punk just defeated John Cena to become the Undisputed WWE Championship. Alberto Del Rio was successful in pinning down CM Punk as Kevin Nash already attacked him.

Alberto defeating CM Punk became the new WWE Championship for the first time in his career.

World Heavyweight Championship

On April 2. 2012, Del Rio vowed to become the next World Heavyweight Championship title defeating Sheamus. He defeated Sheamus in a non-title match to earn a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship title.

Alberto failed his title shot on the fatal-four-way match at Over the Limit. He failed several times while trying to defeat the current champion Sheamus.

He won his first World Heavyweight Championship title, defeating the Big Show in a Last Man Standing match on January 11.

Personal Life

Alberto Del Rio has three children from his first wife Angela Velkei which he divorced in June 2016. The marriage ended in 2015 due to adultery reported by his wife.

Del Rio then got engaged with the fellow female wrestler Paige in 2016 but soon got separated in 2017. He owned a restaurant in San Antonio, Texas, in 2016, and the restaurant was closed in November 2017.

On May 24, 2018, Alberto became the permanent citizen of the United States.
