Curtis Axel was the son of professional wrestler “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig and Leonice Hennig. He was born on October 1, 1979, in Champlin, Minnesota, United States of America. Also, he is a grandson of professional wrestler Larry “The Axe” Hennig. His overall family siblings are part of a wrestler. Curtis has a younger brother and two sisters who are also professional wrestlers. Curtis Axel completed his graduation from North Hennepin Community College.

Career
Axel started his wrestling career training with Brad Rheingans, Harley Race, and his father, Curt Hennig. He began his first professional wrestling debut on July 13, 2007, teaming with Ted Dibiase Jr for World League Wrestling (WLW). They got their first debut victory against Dinn T. Moore and Branden Tatum by disqualification.
World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE)
Curtis Axel signed a developmental contract with WWE on September 11, 2008. He quickly teamed up with Sebastian Slater to win Florida Tag Team Championship, defeating Nic Nemeth and Gavin Spears. They lost their title to The New Hart Foundation on October 30.
Axel then feuded with Sheamus O’Shaunessy for the FCW Florida Heavyweight Championship title, which he lost two times because of disqualification. He got another chance to win the title on the fatal four-way match but lost the game and title. He then challenged Eric Escobar, who won the fatal four-way match with the title and won the FCW Florida Heavyweight Championship on February 26.
Curtis Axel returned FCW after recovery of his injury and teamed up with Brett DiBiase, which they called The Fortunate Sons. Curtis Axel and DiBiase both won the FCW Florida Tag Team Championship against The Dudebusters.
The Nexus
During the part of Nexus, Axel changed his ring name to Michael McGillicutty. He had his debut match, where he did not compete. He competes on another game teamed up with Kofi Kingston, where they defeated Mark Henry and Lucky Cannon. In a six-man tag team match, he was a team member of Alex Riley and Husky Harris, who defeated Kaval, Lucky Cannon, and Percy Watson.
Michael and Husky Harris interfered on the match between John Cena and Wade Barrett, where Barrett pinned Cena to gain a victory. Due to that incident, Harris and McGillicutty were refused as a full-time member of Nexus. They were later confirmed as a Nexus member on October 25. McGillicutty passed his test through initiation and became a permanent member of Nexus.
Intercontinental Championship
He remained as Curtis Axel with his new manager Paul Heyman on May 20, 2013. He faced Triple H on his debut match and won the game because Triple H was unable to continue the game due to suffering concussion-like symptoms. Axel won multiple games against Sin Cara, John Cena, and Chris Jericho.
Curtis Axel had a chance to win Intercontinental Championship at Payback. He successfully defeated Wade Barrett and The Miz to win his first singles WWE title. He retained his WWE Intercontinental Championship title against Wade Barrett in a rematch.
