During his school days, he was much inspired by the comedians, Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy. His parents divorced at a very young age. He left the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in 1991, where he studied theatrical arts.
His mother, Yvonne K. Chappelle Seon (nee Reed), was a teacher at Community College in Prince George. Seon has also worked for Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba; she is also Minister for Unitarian Universalism.
Chappelle has both a stepmom and a stepbrother. The great-grandfather of Dave Chappelle was William David Chappelle; who was born into enslavement and headed a delegation of African Americans who met President Woodrow Wilson at the White House.
After graduating, Dave moved to New York City and made his stage debut as a stand-up comedian at the Apollo Theatre, but wasn’t very successful.
With ‘Robin Hood: Men in Tights’ as ‘Ahchoo,’ he did not give up and finally made a name for himself in the comedy circuit.
Further, Chappelle was offered a role in the ‘Forest Gump’ film of 1994 but turned it down, believing the film would not be a success. He also played a supporting character role in the same year’s film ‘Getting In’.
In the year 1995, he appeared alongside Jim Breuer in the American sitcom, ‘Home Improvement.’ The duo became so successful on-screen that in the sitcom, ‘Buddies,’ they were given lead roles. Jim was fired, however, and the show never really took off with the audience.
Later, in 1996, Dave starred alongside Eddie Murphy in the hit movie, ‘The Nutty Professor,’ which is also his inspiration and idol.
Also, in 1997 he appeared in a small role on ‘Con Air’ and then performed the following year in a significant role in ‘Half-Baked’.
He appeared in one of the episodes of ‘The Larry Sanders Show’ after the success of ‘Half-Baked’ and was also cast opposite Tom Hanks in the movie, ‘You’ve Got Mail.’
He starred in the film ‘Blue Streak’ in a small role in 1999. In an episode titled ‘Dave Chappelle: Killin’ Them Softly,’ he was given his first slot on HBO the following year.
‘Chappelle’s Show’ was aired on Comedy Central from 2003 to 2006, catapulting his career and creating a multi-million – dollar contract for him.
The show’s production was terminated, however, when he disappeared on a trip to South Africa.
Dave toured several cities in the United States in 2006 to promote the documentary film, ‘The Block Party of Dave Chappelle.’
He created history the next year by setting 3 hours and 50-minute stand-up comedy record at the Laugh Factory Sunset Strip Comedy Club. However, Dane Cook broke his record in 2008.
He tried to break Cook’s 7-hour record at the Laugh Factory in 2009 but was thrown into his routine for a mere 5 hours.
