Finlay began his career from his father’s promotion in Glynn in 1974, where he had his first debut match. Before moving to England in 1978, Dave wrestled and trained in Northern Ireland for four years, improving his skills.
Dave won his first-ever title on June 9, 1982, defeating Alan Kilby for the Joint Promotions British Heavy Middleweight Championship. After that, he again was successful in winning the tournament to crown a new British Light Heavyweight Champion defeating Ringo Rigby.
During 1990, Dave Finlay had won All Star’s British Heavyweight Championship title. He traveled to Japan, Germany, and Austria for different wrestling promotions and extended his career.
World Championship Wrestling
David signed a contract with WCW and had his debut match in 1995 under the ring name “Belfast Bruiser.” Later he again renamed into Fit Finlay with a totally different persona. On May 4, 1998, he became the World Television Championship defeating Booker T and Chris Benoit.
Losing the title to Booker T at The Great American Bash, he competes on a Junkyard Invitational tournament at Bash at the Beach, which he won and became Hardcore Junkyard Invitational champion.

Finlay entered WWF/E as a trainer for new wrestlers. Some of the successful wrestlers he trained were John Cena and Randy Orton. He even transformed the WWE Divas training the wrestlers and acclaimed traditional wrestling from bra and panties.
Dave returned to WWE ring match with a gimmick of “A Proud Native Northern-Irishman who loves to Fight.” His first television WWE match was at the age of 47 against Matt Hardy, which ended with disqualification.
