Jocelyn Chia MH370 Joke Backlash: Controversy

On June 6, Chia uploaded an 89 seconds skit video on her social media platforms, which garnered huge public attention. Looking at the video, she is seen talking about the Singapore-Malaysia relationship and the indirect satire of the MH370 flight.

In brief, she dedicated her June 6th show in the name of Singapore’s first prime minister Lee Kwan Yew and how he changed Singapore’s future after how Malaysia “dumped” them back in 1965.

She said, “My country, Singapore after we gained independence from the British, we were a struggling little nation. In order to survive, we formed a union with a larger, more powerful country, Malaysia.”

She continued, “When my prime minister went on TV to announce that you guys had dumped us, he cried because he thought we were not going to survive without you. But then, 40 years later, we became a first-world country.”

“And you guys? Malaysia, what are you now? Still a developing country,” Not only this, Chia continued with her jokes by brutally making fun of the MH370 flight, which went missing back in 2014.

Although the public was already triggered by the first part, her show’s second part is what got her the on-going raging hate.

She joked about the flight saying, “Why haven’t you (Malaysia) paid me a visit in 40 years?”

In another voice, she replied: “I tried, but you know, our airplanes can’t fly,” as a graphic of a Malaysia Airlines plane appeared on the screen.

“What, Malaysia Airlines going missing is not funny, huh?

Lastly, she said, “Some jokes don’t land,” in an obvious reference to flight MH370 that vanished on March 8, 2014.  At the time of their disappearance, the flight was en route from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Beijing, China.

And even after almost a decade, the reason for their disappearance and fate along with the 239 passengers are still unknown to this day.

After her videos went viral all over the internet, people worldwide, especially in Malaysia and Singapore, started canceling her. Her offensive joke eventually led her to lose the citizenship of the country she was trying to promote proudly.

Singapore’s Foreign Minister and its High Commissioner apologized to the Malaysians for the hurt caused by Chia’s “stand-up comedy”.
