Where Is Lauren Mccluskey killer Melvin Rowland?
As tragedy unfolded on Monday, October 22, 2018, at the University of Utah, 37-year-old Melvin Rowland fatally shot 21-year-old Lauren McCluskey, a talented student heptathlete from Pullman, Washington.
The incident occurred after McCluskey broke up with Rowland on October 9 due to discovering his status as a registered sex offender.
Despite McCluskey’s harassment claims and efforts to notify university police, Rowland’s extensive history of sexual assault was not effectively addressed.
Melvin Rowland, on parole at the time of the murder, left the crime scene and later took his own life on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Church.
His troubling history included admissions of sexual assault in 2004, claims of forcing a girl to have sex, and discussions about harming a parole agent in 2016.
Rowland’s actions had previously led to charges, including enticing a minor over the Internet and the sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl, later reduced following a plea agreement.
In the aftermath of McCluskey’s tragic death, Rowland’s co-worker, Nathan Daniel Vogel, faced legal consequences for loaning him the illegally-purchased gun used in the murder.
Vogel pled guilty in June 2019 and received a three-year probation sentence. Another individual, Sarah Emily Lady, faced charges for purchasing the gun for Vogel. Following a one-year diversion program, Lady’s case was dismissed in September 2020.
Notably, Melvin Rowland, having died by suicide, was not charged or sent to prison for killing Lauren McCluskey.
The legal proceedings that followed focused on those who facilitated his access to the weapon.
In October 2020, McCluskey’s parents, Jill and Matt McCluskey, settled a $13.5 million lawsuit against the University of Utah, underscoring the institutional responsibility in the tragic events that unfolded on the campus.
