Tomás Etcheverry is a  young emerging tennis star from Argentina who debuted in 2021 with two runner-up finishes at the claycourt ATP 250s in Santiago and Houston. 

The tennis player had failed to make it past the first round of any major tournament until this year’s Australian Open but has finally made it to the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time at the 2023 French Open. 

Etcheverry got past Jack Draper, Alex de Minaur, and Borna Coric before his victory over Yoshitio Nishioka at the French Open. 

In his bid for a semifinals spot, the World No. 49 faced former World No. 2 and two-time defending semifinalist Alexander Zverev on Wednesday, June 7, with whom he lost the game.

Tomas Etcheverry has been on an emotional rollercoaster after he completed his victory over Nishioka, the third-seeded player he knocked out at Roland Garros.

The world No. 49 got emotional about his late sister after his fourth-round win at the 2023 French Open and dedicated his win to her.

When asked about his victory, Tomas Etcheverry revealed that he has been asking his late sister Magui for strength, whom he lost last September to Breast Cancer.

He said, “Honestly, I’ve been asking my sister for her strength recently, and I know she always gives it to me.” The tennis player also said, “Today, during an important moment, I said, ‘Magui, please help me.’ And she helped me: I hit an ace.”

Tomas Etcheverry’s sister Magui Etcheverry also called Magui, was 32 years old when she lost her life. She had been battling Breast Cancer since 2021 and finally bid goodbye to the world in September 2022.

Magui was a married woman who had a family. She left behind her husband Tomas Curotto and two children, Galo (7) and Juanita ( 4), when she left the world.

The death of his sister at such a young age was a very difficult time for Tomas as she shared a close bond with his sister and her children.

The tennis player also dedicated his opening-round victory in the 2022 Tel Aviv Open to his sister, a few days after she passed.

Tomas Etcheverry’s parents, Fernando And Maria Lia, hail from Argentina. The tennis player was born and raised in La Plata, Argentina, by his parents.

The player has not revealed many details about his parents to the media, but he often mentions the support he has from his parents.

His parents supported him in his journey and assisted him in developing as a player. In 2021, at 20, he made his professional debut. 

The world No. 49 spends most of his time in Europe and the United States, participating in different tournaments, but he keeps his parents close to his heart.

Tomas also has a brother, Feli Etcheverry, who shares a great bond with him and supports him in every game.

The young player is very close to his family and likes to celebrate his victories with them only. He celebrated his fourth-round win at the 2023 French Open with his grandparents Eduardo and Ana while his dog Roland Garros watched from home. 

Etcheverry faced Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals of the French Open. Etcheverry said he would approach the match with self-belief despite Zverev’s greater experience.

Alexander Zverev beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals of the French Open and defeated Etcheverry with a score of 6-4 3-6 0-2.
