Early Life of Umaga

Edward Smith Fatu (Umaga) was born on March 28, 1973, in the American Anoa’i family of the United States. He has a strong background of the professional wrestler as his two older brothers, Sam and Solofa were also professional wrestlers.

His mother, Vera, was the sister of The Wild Samoans (Afa and Sika). Umaga is an uncle of The Usos and has a cousin of professional wrestlers Yokozuna, The Rock, Rosey and Roman Reigns.

Fatu’s mother passed away on April 27, 2008, after the seven-year-battle with cancer.

Early Career (1995 – 2001)

Fatu began his wrestling career training with his cousin Matt Anoa’i at the Wild Samoan professional wrestling school that was operated by their family members.

He has his first professional debut match after completion of his training in 1995 on Afa’s World Xtreme Wrestling promotion.

World Wrestling Federation/Entertainment (2001 – 2003)

Umaga signed a contract with World Wrestling Federation in 2001 along with his cousin Matt. They became a tag team partner with the name “The Island Boyz”.

The Island Boyz won the HWA Tag Team Championship defeating Evan Karagias and Shannon Moore in November 2001. They also won the MCW Southern Tag Team Championship completing Memphis Championship Wrestling.

Umaga and Anoa’i made their main roaster debut where they were hired by Eric Bischoff to attack random wrestlers each week on the episode of Raw as 3-Minute Warning.

They not only attack the wrestlers but also attack non-wrestlers i.e., ring announcer Lilian Garcia and former wrestlers Jimmy Snuka, The Fabulous Moolah and Mae Young.

Umaga was soon released from the WWE contract due to his violation of the Wellness policy twice.

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2003 – 2004)

This Samoan Wrestler debuted in Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) on September 24, 2003, under the ring name of Ekmo Fatu. In his debut match, he helped Sonny Siaki to win against D’Lo Brown in a casket match.

Umaga and Siaki teamed and defeated the team of Shark Boy and Mad Mikey. His final appearance on NXT was on August 11, 2004, where he lost to Alex Shelley.

All Japan Pro Wrestling (2004 – 2005)

Edward Smith Fatu also appeared in All Japan Pro Wrestling with a ring name “Jamal”. He teamed up with Taiyo Kea and won the World’s Strongest Tag Determination League tournament on December 1, 2004.

The Tag Team even won the World Tag Team Championship on January 16, 2005.

Intercontinental Champion

Umaga returned on World Wrestling Entertainment in December 2005 as a representative of Vince McMahon for “Battle of the Billionaires”.

Being the representative for Vince McMahon, he was granted an Intercontinental Championship match against Jeff Hardy which he won and held the title.

Umaga as a representative of McMahon and Bobby Lashley as a representative of Donald Trump feuded for a hair versus hair match on Wrestlemania 23.

Unfortunately, Umaga lost the match which led Vince McMahon to shave his head.

Personal Life

Edward Smith Fatu was married to L.T and have 4 children.

He was once charged to purchase pharmaceuticals from an online pharmacy on August 30, 2007, which was posted by Sports Illustrated, the New York Daily News and The Washington Post.

Umaga purchased somatotropin for his growth hormone between July and December 2006. He again violated the Wellness Policy of World Wrestling Entertainment and was released from his WWE contract.

Death

Umaga died due to a severe heart attack on December 4, 2009, caused due to the overdose of drugs hydrocodone, carisoprodol, and diazepam in his liver.

He already was suffering from both heart and liver disease and due to the extra dose of drugs, it ultimately led to his death.
