The UN International Court of Justice in The Hague has heard evidence of Israel’s “chilling” and “incontrovertible” intent to commit genocide in Gaza, with full awareness of the number of people it is killing. This is the beginning of a case that Israel has called bogus.
Amid a heated environment outside the court in The Hague on the first morning of the two-day hearing, South Africa, the party bringing the case, accused Israel of “grave violence and genocidal acts.”
It urged the judges to impose an instant cease-fire. The number of civilians killed by Israel and the remarks made by its military and political officials, notably Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, were cited as proof of genocide.
It backed up its claims with images of mass graves in Palestine, Israeli flags flying over Gaza’s ruins, and recordings purportedly showing Netanyahu endorsing genocide and troops following his lead by yelling “No uninvolved citizens.”
Adila Hassim, a South African attorney, told the court, “Genocides are never declared in advance but this court has the benefit of the past 13 weeks of evidence that shows incontrovertibly, a pattern of conduct and related intention that justifies a plausible claim of genocidal acts.”
