Brad Smith, the head coach of Youngstown State’s swimming team, is entering his fifth year of coaching both the women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams. But in a shocking turn of events, he has been out of the pool because of his harrowing accident.

Smith, who graduated from Vermont in 2007, was an active participant on the Catamounts’ swim team. After completing his studies, he assumed the role of Director of Women’s Swimming Operations at Vermont for a span of two years as well.

In 2012, Smith assumed the position of head coach for the women’s swimming team at Western Colorado and established the program from the ground up.

Over the course of two years leading the team, Smith supervised a group of swimmers that achieved notable accomplishments.

During his time as an assistant coach at Maine, Smith led the team to success, helping them break 21 school records. At YSU, he led the team during the challenging 2020–21 season impacted by the pandemic.

This season, both the men’s and women’s teams achieved their highest placements in program history at the Horizon League Championships, with each team finishing fourth overall.

The Brad Smith accident was a very sad and unfortunate event; the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s press release said that it was a three-car crash on the 9th of June at 3:56 p.m.

According to Mahoningmatters, Rebecca L. Yoder, 43, from Beloit, failed to yield to John D. Burford, 68, from East Rochester, resulting in a collision. The impact caused Burford’s vehicle to veer into the path of Smith’s vehicle, resulting in a head-on collision.”

Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper details say Rebecca had a Chevy Impala that failed to yield John’s truck, which then collided with Smith’s crossover SUV. Further details of the accident are still under investigation.

While Rebecca and John sustained little to no injury, the greatest harm was inflicted upon Brad. According to Swinswan, Brad Smith’s accident caused him injuries “that require surgery and a long road to recovery.”

However, the nature and extent of the coach’s injuries have not been revealed. But it looks like the accident will affect Brad, his family, and his career for a long time.

Much to everyone’s sorrow, Brad was not alone in his car that unfortunate day. He was traveling with his 8-month-old son Finn, who sadly could not survive the harrowing effects of the crash and succumbed to his injuries.

Finn was rushed immediately after the crash to Akron Children’s Hospital for treatment. But the injuries were so severe that the doctors could not save the precious child even after trying hard. Finn Smith sadly, passed away in the hospital on June 10.

The sadness and trauma that Finn, Brad, and his wife are going through are immeasurable. The Brad Smith accident not only affected Brad’s career but also destroyed the most cherished part of his family.

Generous and supportive, the Youngstown community formed a GoFundMe page to support Smith and his wife, Becky. After a day, $5,000 had poured in, helping the fundraiser halfway toward its goal.

The page has raised $35,000 out of its $10,000 goal, showing people’s sympathy and empathy toward them. The page primarily aims to encourage Becky to take a break from her job and support the family emotionally and financially.

“Finn was a bright light who brought a smile to each and every person who met him,” the GoFundMe described.

While nothing could heal the emotional scar on their hearts, we hope the financial support helps them get back on their feet and move on with the memory of Finn.
