She asserts full cooperation with the investigation. The Justice Department, as well as the Federal Election Commission and the House Committee on Ethics, are reviewing the matter.

Congressional ethics rules allow family members to be paid from campaign funds for “bona fide services” within fair market value.

Bush maintains her husband’s services are at or below market rate, and last year, the Office of Congressional Ethics unanimously dismissed any wrongdoing in the case.

The investigation, disclosed by the House clerk on Monday, involves a subpoena received by the House Sergeant at Arms.

Security concerns, heightened since the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, remain a priority for lawmakers.

In 2023, the Capitol Police dealt with over 8,000 threats against lawmakers, a significant increase from approximately 5,200 in 2018.

The attack on Paul Pelosi 2022, the husband of former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, highlights the persisting security challenges faced by public figures.
