Eamonn “Chick” Deacy was a talented professional footballer from Galway, Ireland, who left an indelible mark on the sport. He was born into a family of football enthusiasts on October 1, 1958, in Galway, Ireland.

Following his passion for football, the athlete made his debut in Sligo Rovers away to Shelbourne at Harold’s Cross Stadium on December 14, 1975. However, it was his time at Aston Villa which made him a star player in the country.

In a professional football career spanning more than 15 years, he played for seven teams lending his passion and expertise to the ball. Additionally, he also played internationally in 1982 and 1984 for the Republic of Ireland and League of Ireland XI.

Following his success in football, he received various honors, including FAI Cup, FAI League Cup, Munster Senior Cup, European Cup, European Super Cup, and FA Charity Shield, among others.

Unfortunately, Eamonn died following a heart attack on February 13, 2012, at the young age of 53.

Don DC, a legendary figure in Galway football circles, unexpectedly became a celebrity when approached by a reporter seeking his opinion on Stephen Kenny’s Ireland team.

During the interview, Don spoke favorably of Stephen Kenny, describing him as an honest, brilliant, and amazing manager. However, he expressed his disappointment in the lack of good players. Don’s passionate love for football and his humorous attitude won the hearts of many.

He also shared that he felt “hurt” by the talks surrounding Kenny’s potential sacking. Don even humorously remarked, “I’d rather have left my wife than see him go.”

When asked if he worried about his wife seeing his comment, he responded wittily, “I don’t mind, she might leave me then, and she might be better off!” giving a glimpse of passion for football on Deacy’s siblings.

Eamonn Deacy, fondly known as “Chick,” was a true Galway man whose life revolved around football and family. He attended St Joseph’s College as the youngest of ten children on Henry Street, following in the footsteps of his father, uncles, and eight siblings.

His father affectionately referred to him as “little chicken,” a moniker he carried throughout his life. As the family’s youngest member, he had a special connection with his parents. Eamonn displayed a natural talent and passion for the game from an early age.

His grandfather’s connection to the Galway FA, having sold them the land that would become Eamonn’s “home” pitch, further solidified his bond with football. By the time he was thirteen, Eamonn could often be found at the swamp, sharpening his skills.

Eamonn’s path crossed with his future wife, Mary, when she interviewed him as a young journalist for the Galway Advertiser. Their meeting marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership.

Despite receiving offers to play with prestigious clubs like Derby, Eamonn chose to return to Galway to be with his family. He married Mary and had two amazing children, a daughter named Dawn and a son named Jake.
