Her father had left Czechoslovakia in 1948 when he was sixteen years old and playing hockey in Paris for his country.

Following his defection, he corresponded with American teens he had met at the World Scout Jamboree in France the year before as a Scout; these teenagers helped him raise the money he needed to move to the US.
