The law, passed unanimously by the legislature, was enacted after Malinowski’s death in July 2017.

In August 2015, Malinowski suffered severe burns inflicted by Michael Slager outside a Gahanna gas station.

After enduring 59 surgeries and nearly two years in the hospital, she was eventually transferred to a palliative care center.

Upon Malinowski’s death in June 2017, Slager faced an indictment for aggravated murder with death penalty specifications.

A day before his murder trial, Slager opted to plead guilty to aggravated murder, avoiding the death penalty but receiving a life sentence in prison with no chance for parole.
