At the age of 46, Lior Lubin, a former EuroLeague player for Maccabi Tel Aviv, succumbed to cancer after a prolonged battle with the illness.

Despite a previous encounter with the disease, Lubin’s health deteriorated abruptly several months ago.

Faced with the grim prognosis from doctors, he was discharged from the hospital and spent his final days at home surrounded by family, as reported by Sport5.

Known for his connection with the current Maccabi head coach, Oded Kattash, Lubin received visits from close friends, including Kattash, in the weeks leading up to his passing.

Having played professionally internationally, notably with Maccabi in the 2002-2003 season, and domestically, Lubin transitioned to coaching.

In 2014, he assumed the role of an assistant coach for the Israeli national team.

Lubin coached Hapoel Be’er Sheva during the current season but left the club in November due to declining health.

His coaching career included roles as an assistant coach for Maccabi, Panathinaikos Athens, Hapoel Holon, and other clubs.

The 46-year-old, a former champion with Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2003, requested to be released from Hapoel Be’er Sheva in November 2023.

He played for various teams during his playing career, including Maccabi Petah Tikva, Ironi Ramat Gan, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Azovmash, Apollon Patras, and CSKA Sofia.

Lubin achieved notable success as a player, winning the Israeli League championship in 2003 and earning the title of Israeli League Assists Leader in 2000.

After transitioning to coaching, Lubin held various positions, starting as an assistant coach for Hapoel Gilboa Galil from 2008 to 2010.

Later, in 2021, Lior Lubin took over as Ironi Ness Ziona’s head coach; in 2022, he assumed the head coach role for Hapoel Be’er Sheva.
