Bio and Early Life

Mike Rowe was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 18, 1962, as Michael Gregory Rowe. The parents were both teachers, John and Peggy Rowe. Rowe is the eldest of three children of his parents; also, he has two younger brothers named Scott and Phil.

Further, he had his secondary schooling in Overlea. Rowe developed an interest in theater and singing while studying there, and excelled in them under choir director Freddie King. He later gave King credit for his belief in performing.

He became Eagle Scout while studying at high school in 1979, and he was asked to read out loud to the students at the Maryland School for the Blind during a service project. The incident spurred his interest in writing and storytelling.

He graduated from Overlea High School in 1980 and eventually joined Essex Community College, but soon moved to Towson University, where he graduated in 1985.

With Baltimore, Opera Rowe sang professionally. He says of this profession,

“I joined the opera to get my union card and meet girls; and was a saloon singer, so I went down to the Baltimore Opera and learned an aria and auditioned. I figured I’d do one show and quit. But the girls were everywhere, and the truth is, the music was decent.”

Mike Rowe joined Baltimore Opera in 1984 with false credentials to obtain a SAG certificate, which was necessary for entering the television industry.

Ultimately, he obtained the certification for his ‘Rigoletto‘ performance; however, he continued his job because he had enjoyed his experience by then.

At the audition, for eight minutes, he talked about a pencil that landed him with an on-the-spot rendezvous. After three years, he was fired for making fun of the products and the callers.

Yet by then, for a long time, he had been an expert in talking without any substance. He documented a variety of unpleasant careers in ‘Someone’s Gotta Do It,’ including a graphic piece on artificial insemination by a cow.
