Anthony Carelli, aka, Santino Marella was born on March 14, 1974, in  Mississauga, Ontario. He completed his high-school education from Philip Pocock Catholic Secondary School with a win of Peel Secondary School Athletic Association Tournament.

Anthony Carelli began his professional wrestling career in 2003 on the Ontario Independent circuit, where his ring name was Johnny Geo Basco. He completed his mixed martial arts in 2006, having a 6-1 record before he was assigned to World Wrestling Entertainment.

World Wrestling Entertainment

Carelli, in 2005, started to train at Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), which was a developmental territory for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). He adopted the gimmick of Boris Alexiev, a Russian mixed martial artist for his debut match, but couldn’t win the match.

He made his TV debut on April 12, 2006, winning against Mo Sexton. His signature move was stiff strikes and submission, where he had a 10-second win against Dewey.

Alexiev won the OVW Television Championship on January 24, 2007, against Mike Kruel. He soon lost the title back to Mike Kruel and regained again. After a month on OVW, he was assigned for a WWE main roster.

Intercontinental Championship

Beginning his main roster on WWE, he debuted as Santino Marella on April 16, 2007, as a member of the Raw brand. On his debut, he was selected to have a match against Umaga by Vince McMahon.

He surprisingly won the WWE Intercontinental Championship title with the help of Bobby Lashley. Marella successfully defended his title against Chris Masters but lost the title to Umaga on July 12 by disqualification.

Santino Marella teamed up Carlito and feuded with Hardcore Holly and Cody Rhodes to win the World Tag Team Championship. Marella and Beth Phoenix became the partners and known as “power couple.”

At SummerSlam, the couple wrestled Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston and WWE Women’s Champion Mickie James, where Phoenix pinned James winning both the titles.

United States Champion

On July 21, Marella teamed wth Zack Ryder defeating Tag Team Champions David Otunga and Michael McMillicutty. He got caught in a car accident on September 1, that led his shoulder injury and inactive for several weeks.

After returning to WWE, he defeated Jinder Mahal and Jack Swagger. Marella won a royal battle match for the World Heavyweight Championship to replace Randy Orton at Elimination Chamber.

On March 5, during the episode of Raw, Santino Marella defeated Jack Swagger and became the new United States Champion. He then successfully defended the title against Swagger in a steel cage match.

Retirement

On June 17, 2017, Santino announced his retirement from professional wrestling and to have the last match for Destiny World Wrestling. After the end of the match, he formally announced his career-ending speech.
