After the announcement of the new documentary The Deepest Breath, fans have again started to be curious about Stephen Keenan Parents, including their personal life and family details.
Stephen Keenan was a highly acknowledged and prominent safety diver in the world of freediving. He was also co-founder of Dahab FreeDivers, a freediving school based in Dahab, Egypt.
Over the years, Keenan had become a skilled person in his field, excelling both as a diver and as a safety diver.
Moreover, his expertise and unwavering dedication to his fellow divers made him an integral part of the freediving community.
Recently he has been highlighted in the news after the documentary featuring his life and Alessia Zecchini, his then-student, has been set to release in mid-July 2023.

Stephen Keenan Parents: Mother Maura Keenan, Family Details
Stephen still has been one of the world’s most respected and motivating freedivers. He was born in Glasnevin, Dublin, Ireland in a close-knit family of 4 members, his parents Maura Keenan and Peter Keenan, and brother Gray Keenan.
Due to privacy concerns, not many details are known about his father, Peter. However, the late-freediver’s mother was a school teacher.
Stephen studied microbiology at his college and later only he shifted his career to freediving professionally after his visit to Egypt and watching free diving. This huge transition must have been difficult for him. Regardless of this, Stephen Keenan’s parents were always supportive of his decision.
Mainly his brother, Gray, who grew up with him and knew him since his early days. Though their age gap is not known in public, it is evident that Gray also must have been with Stephen in his ups and downs.
Stephen Keenan Girlfriend Alessia Zecchini
Stephen Keenan was in love with his girlfriend, Alessia Zecchini, who is also a free diver. She is a renowned Italian freediver known for her excellent talents and remarkable achievements.
She is also appearing in a major role in the NetFlix documentary The Deepest Breath. Talking about Alessia and Stephen’s romantic relationship, both of them met each other through diving.
Other than having a loving bond, Stephen was also a coach of Alessia. Together they have broken many records including the coveted ‘Vertical Blue’ competition in the Bahamas in 2017.
Not only this but with the help of the late diver, Alessia was able to reach a depth of 104m- the deepest point ever reached by a female freediver in history.
Later, she surpassed her record of 104m by 109m in 2023 in Moalboal, Cebu, the Philippines. Despite all the fame, Alessia has never hesitated to praise her late boyfriend.
In a recent interview, she was spotted saying ” Stephen’s presence made me feel safe in the darkness” and ” He rescued me, but I couldn’t rescue him,” acknowledging the tragic circumstances of his passing.
Stephen Keenan Death And Obituary
The death of famous diver Stephen Keenan had indeed been one of the most shocking news of 2017. All of these started when Stephen and his girlfriend, Alessia planned to tackle the world’s most dangerous diver; The Blue Hole, in Dahab, Egypt.
The operation was carefully planned and timed in a series of practice exercises. Though safety divers descend no more than 30m, they were both supposed to meet at a depth of 52m.
But due to a timing problem, Stephen descended after 20 secs more, and when he reached the designated spot, Alessia was nowhere to be found.
Then, he let go of the rope and started to look for his lover in complete blue darkness.
And, when he found her running out of oxygen, he safely grabbed Alessia and pushed her to the surface. While Alessia was safely on her back, Stephen was face-down in the water. When he was rescued by his safety team, he was already in need of CPR.
After doing whatever the team could do, they took him to the nearest hospital in a taxi, as there was no AD allowed at The Blue Hole at the time of the incident. However, it was later found at the hospital that Stephen was never revived from the CPR.
This was further included in a report done by the Deeper Blue team which confirmed that a small series of mishaps as well as a lack of availability of medically qualified personnel onshore resulted in such an unfortunate event.
This incident shocked many of his well-wishers worldwide including his diving friends and most importantly his family who still have been mourning his death.
