In contrast, PM Justin Trudeau expressed his outrage over BCE Inc.’s widespread layoffs, specifically targeting Bell Media’s cuts as a “garbage decision.”

Justin Trudeau criticized the company for cutting multiple television newscasts and other programming, highlighting the impact on local journalism quality and Canadian democracy.

Bell Media attributed its actions to declining ad revenues and news division losses, leading to the elimination of over 4,800 positions, with less than 10% coming from Bell Media.

The layoffs primarily affect television properties such as CTV and CTV News Channel.

They are feared to exacerbate the decline of local newsrooms and journalism quality, potentially leading to a detrimental cycle of revenue loss and further job cuts.
