John Savident, the star of Fred Elliott, suffered several health issues before passing away last week at the age of 86.

We are sad to announce the death of the actor John Savident who died on Wednesday 21 February, he was a much-loved husband and father of two.

He will be sorely missed by all who knew him,” his agent said in a statement today. The beloved actor made his debut on Coronation Street’s cobblestones in 1994.

Although the circumstances of John’s passing have not yet been made public, the celebrity was upfront about his poor health not long after his Coronation Street character was killed off.

John said he was awaiting heart surgery in 2006, following Fred’s stroke on the day he was set to wed Bev Unwin (Susie Blake).

At the time, he stated, “Next year I am having a heart operation. I am having a new valve in. I am sick of the one I have got.”

John Savident underwent hip replacement surgery, heart surgery, and a diabetes diagnosis. He stated at the time, according to The Mirror, “I am having a heart operation next year.”

I’m getting a new valve inserted. I’m tired of my current partner.” The actor said that having a hip replacement four years later slowed down his career.

He told the Manchester Evening News: “Now, in what I call the tea-time of my career, I’ve turned down quite a bit of work because I had a heart operation and a new hip.”

John considered writing the screenplay for Shakespeare’s The Dream to be “an absolute pleasure” at the time.

“I’ll be using the text wherever possible set to Mendelsshon’s score and as it’s mainly the fairy scenes it’ll be delightful,” said the actor.

Johns stated in the same article that his choice to leave the soap opera was influenced by his heart surgery.
