Born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, he previously played in various local metal bands like Modifidious. He joined Slipknot in February 1996 and was originally the replacement for the band’s original guitarist.
Also known as the most quiet and most private member of the metal band, he earned the nickname “The Quiet One.” Since, at an interview, he had also joked about “probably being out killing people,” if not being part of the band, the media gave him the nickname “The Killer.”

Craig had been suffering from minor health issues from time to time. He is an active member of the band since early 1996, but in September 2004, it was announced that due to a “medical emergency,” for a short period, he would not be performing with Slipknot.
The band’s official website explained, “Craig Jones #133 (#5) has been suffering incredible pain during the first week of our European tour. Therefore, a decision was made for him to return to the States for emergency dental surgery”. While it was said to be a dental emergency, fans speculated it was something more.
On June 7, 2023, it was announced that Slipknot parted ways with Craig Jones, much to the fans’ dismay. However, the statement was quickly removed from the website, leading to various speculations about Jones’s departure. While this statement did not reveal much, people’s minds questioned whether Craig Jone’s health issues had returned.
While no reason has been given for Jones’ departure from the band, no official confirmation of his replacement for Slipknot’s European live dates has been given either. Nevertheless, it has been speculated that either the band has bad blood with him or Craig Jones’ health issues have taken over again.
