Valdez Venita Demings, an American politician and former law enforcement officer, represented Florida’s 10th congressional district from 2017 to 2023.

This district encompasses much of the western side of Orlando, including areas surrounding its renowned resort parks.

Born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1957, Demings is now 66 years old and is affiliated with the Democratic Party.

Before pursuing a political career, Demings served as the Chief of the Orlando Police Department from 2007 to 2011.

Since 1988, she has been married to Jerry Demings. Demings received her education at Samuel W. Wolfson High School and Florida State University, graduating in 1979.

Recently, the news of Val Demings’ brother Benny passing away has caught the attention. Died on February 8, 2024, Benny was close to Val.

Their family is currently grieving but talking to her followers on Twitter, Val expressed that she won’t grieve for her brother like she has no hope.

She further stated that she was blessed to receive the love he gave her and the life Benny lived.

Benny’s sister, Valdez Venita Butler, born in 1957, grew up in a poor family in Mandarin, Jacksonville, Florida, as one of seven children.

Her father worked as a janitor, and her mother as a maid. Attending segregated schools in the 1960s, she graduated from Wolfson High School in 1975.

Demings developed an interest in law enforcement during her time in the “school patrol” at Dupont Junior High School.

She studied criminology at Florida State University, earning her degree in 1979, and later obtained a master’s in public administration from Webster University Orlando in 1996.

After college, she worked as a state social worker in Jacksonville briefly before joining the Orlando Police Department (OPD) in 1983 as a patrol officer on the west side of Orlando.

Her career peaked when she became the chief of the Orlando Police Department in 2007, overseeing a notable 40% decrease in violent crime from 2007 to 2011.

After 27 years of service, Demings retired from her position as chief of OPD on June 1, 2011.

She notably served as the first female chief of the Orlando Police Department from 2007 to 2011, concluding a 27-year career with the department.

Demings, a Democratic nominee for Florida’s 10th congressional district in both 2012 and 2016, experienced victory in 2016 after statewide redistricting.

She gained national attention when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed her as a House impeachment manager for President Donald Trump’s first Senate trial in January 2020.

Furthermore, Demings was considered a top candidate for Joe Biden’s vice-presidential running mate in the 2020 United States presidential election.

In the 2022 United States Senate election in Florida, she ran as the Democratic nominee but was defeated by Republican incumbent Marco Rubio.
