Back on February 11, 2006, Dick Cheney, the then-Vice President of the United States, unintentionally discharged a 28-gauge Perazzi shotgun.
The victim of the gunshot was Harry Whittington, a 78-year-old Texas lawyer, while they were engaged in a quail hunting expedition in Riviera, Texas.
On February 12, 2006, Katherine Armstrong, the owner of the ranch, informed the Corpus Christi Caller-Times about the occurrence. Both Cheney and Whittington referred to the event as an unintended accident.
On February 14, 2006, Whittington experienced a non-fatal heart attack and atrial fibrillation due to a lead-shot pellet from the shotgun that had become lodged near his heart.
He also suffered a collapsed lung. Cheney didn’t address the matter publicly until February 15, when he discussed the incident in an interview with Fox News.
Initial reports suggested that Cheney and Whittington were close friends and that the injuries were minor, but Whittington later clarified that their relationship was more of acquaintanceship than close friendship.
