For over six decades in Garden City with his wife Frances, Cecil’s legacy went beyond farming, encompassing roles as an oilman, entrepreneur, investor, visionary, and leader.
With investments in the oil and gas industry, his multifaceted career showcased his diverse contributions to various sectors.
Cecil’s influence expanded into banking and farm implement dealerships.
He was also recognized as one of the largest independent oil and gas producers in Kansas through his company, American Warrior, Inc.
His extensive investments also spanned ethanol production and real estate development, including the upcoming indoor sports complex in Garden City.

Attending Oklahoma A&M from 1946-48, Cecil O’Brate’s dedication to education was recognized with an honorary doctorate of humane letters from OSU in 2018.
Known for his remarkable philanthropic efforts, he was instrumental in establishing the O’Brate Foundation, which has generously awarded over $7 million in college scholarships.
The foundation primarily focuses on supporting individuals who grew up in the foster care system or faced economic disadvantages.

Born in Enid, Oklahoma, in 1928, O’Brate attended Oklahoma A&M from 1946-48 and embarked on a career as a self-made serial entrepreneur.
He served as the owner, developer, and operator of multiple businesses spanning diverse industries, including agriculture, banking, manufacturing, energy, hospitality, real estate, alternative energy, medicine, and food science.
O’Brate and his wife, Frances, celebrated a marriage of over 70 years and dedicated much of their lives to Garden City, Kansas.
They played a pivotal role in transforming the city into a business and shopping hub between Wichita, Kansas, and Denver.
Notably, Cecil contributed to the establishment of American Warrior, Inc., becoming one of the largest independently owned oil and gas production companies in Kansas.
